What Are Unhelpful Thinking Patterns?
Unhelpful thinking patterns, also called cognitive distortions, are automatic ways of thinking that don't reflect reality accurately. They're mental shortcuts our brains take that can make us feel worse about ourselves and our situations.
Everyone experiences these thinking patterns to some extent—it's a normal part of being human. However, certain groups may experience them more frequently or intensely, including:
• Neurodivergent individuals (ADHD, autism, etc.)
• People with depression or anxiety
• Those with PTSD or trauma histories
• People in active addiction
• Individuals in recovery
• Those experiencing high stress or burnout
Recognizing these patterns is an important step toward changing them and building healthier ways of thinking.
