Before You Subscribe to Otik Academy – There Are Some Things You Should Know:

  • We use humour via memes throughout our courses – on purpose.
All of the memes featured in our content were created by Zea, our founder, and are based entirely on her own lived experience.
These memes are not meant to be generalisations of how all autistic people experience the world – they reflect Zea’s personal lens and are used to illustrate concepts in a relatable, grounded way.

Our use of humour isn’t random or intended to be dismissive of very real and often very difficult challenges — it’s backed by reliable research.

    Studies show that humour:

    • Helps people cope with stress, anxiety, and overwhelm (particularly in neurodivergent populations)

    • Enhances emotional regulation and encourages perspective-taking

    • In the context of education, humour has been shown to improve memory retention, increase learner engagement, and support comprehension of complex or sensitive topics

That said, humour in learning isn’t for everyone. If you're likely to find light-hearted or meme-based content off-putting or offensive, this platform may not be the best fit for your learning style – and that’s okay.

  • Courses are fully self-led – meaning you go at your own pace, in your own time.
To get the most from our content, you should feel comfortable reading and understanding written information independently.
This means that these courses may not be suitable for individuals with higher support needs or those who require full Easy Read formats, one-to-one instruction, or substantial accommodations.
We’re working hard to expand accessibility, but want to be transparent about what’s available right now.

  • You can access Otik Academy on almost any device – including mobile phones, tablets (like iPads), laptops, or desktop computers, as long as your device connects to the internet. You can learn wherever and whenever works best for you.

  • Screen reader compatibility is currently limited – unfortunately, the platform we use to host our courses does not support screen reader technology at this time. We know this is an accessibility barrier, and we’re actively exploring alternative solutions that are more inclusive.

  • Your experience may be different — and that’s completely okay.
Some content may feel highly relevant to your situation, while other parts might not apply at all. You are encouraged to adapt the material to suit your needs, skip what doesn’t resonate, and use what helps. Take what you need, leave what you don’t. Simples.

  • Terminology changes —no offence is intended. Terminology can change, it can also different depending on where you are in the world. These courses were created over the space of 2+ years, which means some things might be different again now. We do not intend to cause distress when using certain terminology and we do encourage you to click submit feedback at the end of a course if you see old terminology or terms that may cause offence or distress. We may use “autistic person” and “person with autism” interchangeably. We are slowly working our way through the courses to make sure these terms are updated to more suitable and inclusive language.

  • Important: Our courses are not a substitute for medical advice.
Zea is not a medical doctor. While she holds qualifications and has extensive expertise in psychology and autism, the content within Otik Academy is designed as a supportive educational guide, not as a replacement for professional diagnosis, treatment, or clinical advice. Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider for medical or mental health concerns.

Some examples of the type of humour we use in our memes.
Remember, if you find light-hearted humour in coping or learning offensive it is completely valid.
This just might not be the platform for you – and that’s perfectly okay!
